Kitchen Lab Rats

Today was a day of kitchen lab rats, of the student variety, cooking up a storm while learning chemistry and making art.

Students worked through their 'kitchen science' lab this morning to kick off a new term by making sugar stained glass in their seminar Radioactive - a class designed to form a foundation for individual projects connecting science and culture with a particular focus on Chemistry.

In addition to a series of active lab experiences, students are also examining Radioactive: Marie and Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout, by Lauren Redniss. This unique book has been described as part history, part love story, part artwork and all genius and offers students an amazing example of expression that is personalized, creative, narrative and compelling.

"We are constantly looking to provide students with professional examples that demonstrate multiple ways to convey ideas and learning. It's what we want our students to do here at Clark Street. We want them to find creative and personalized ways to express themselves, tell their stories, demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding, and this book offers up such a rich example."explains Heather Messer, CSCS Seminar Leader and Nationally Board Certified Science Teacher.

Ms. Messer's aptitude for designing an instructional space that provides direct instruction when needed and space to explore, experiment, and extend is admirable. She has carefully crafted a learning environment where chemistry comes alive and as she puts it, "In this seminar chemistry explains a love story, espionage, modern chemical warfare, and the exponential leaps in our understanding of science that have happened in the last century or so."

Imagine what these kitchen lab rats might jump into next with that kind of a foundation.
